Palm Take On iPhone & Google Android

In a direct attack on Apples 3G iPhone, Palm have rolled out a brand new Web OS device with a key difference in the speed with whihc it accesses the internet. An accessory to the new phone is a cable less wireless charging dock.

The sleek black phone comes with 8 gigabytes of storage, GPS navigational capabilities and Wi-Fi. It has a 3.1-inch touch-screen display as well as a slide-out keyboard. However it will not go on sale in Australia until the last quarter of 2009.

The Pre and the new operating system will “redefine the centre of your access point to the Internet,” said Ed Colligan, president and chief executive of Palm during a packed presentation attended by SmartHouse.

An accessory to the new phone is a cable less wireless charging dock. In what appears on the surface the device has sophisticated touch-screen interface and a single e-mail in-box that pulls in mail from work and personal accounts. Unlike the iPhone, the Pre combines Internet instant messaging and traditional phone-based text messaging into a single program. The phone charges on a special wireless charging platform without the need to attach a cable.
