| TPG has been a star performer in the no contract mobile plan race for a while now. Earlier this year they won the People’s CHOICE: Best Value Mobile Phone Service award. I can’t speak for their service levels but I can speak for the plans and the rates and the data that is on offer. They are certainly very competitive and very attractive at the same time.At the bottom end we have the $1 Pay As You Go plan which gives you very affordable calls at just 9.9c per min with calls actually billed per second, meaning that you will only pay for what you use (not the full minute). There are no credit with this plan you only pay for what you use and at $1 per month it could be a great alternative to a prepaid plan if you hardly use your phone.TPG then offers you the Talk & Text Cap Plans. If you aren’t already using TPG for your internet or other services then the plans on offer begin with the Light ($9.99 per month) which offers a total of $250 in calls, split evenly between calls to anyone and calls to other TPG numbers. The $125 to anyone also covers international calls. In addition you also receive 250MB of data (excess comes in at 0.2¢/10KB). With calls rate at 40c p/30s and a 35c flagfall that $125 will buy you 64, 2 minute calls in the month.The Medium plan ($18.99 per month) offers $700 in calls ($330 to anyone inc international and $370 to TPG) and 1GB data. Total number of 2 minute calls in a month comes to 169. The Heavy ($35.99 per month) plans comes with 2GB of data and $1000 in total calls. With $600 to anyone, you have access to 307, 2 minute calls. Voice mail is free on these plans however 13, 1300 and 1800 numbers are not included which is a bit of a bummer.If you are interested in these plans, it might also pay to compare them to the LiveConnected range. At the $35 – $40 per month ragen you also have the Amaysim Unlimited plan which offers better value that the Heavy plan.
The final set of plans are the Cap Saver Plans. This range includes the Starter and Basic which offer $50 and $150 in call credit respectively but no data nor free TPG to TPG calls. The Starter is just $9.99 p/month and the Basic $12.99. The 49 Cap Saver ($19.99 p/month) offers $300 in call value plus 1000 minutes of calls to TPG mobiles between 8pm and midnight. The 79 Cap Saver ($39.99 p/month) offers $550 in calls credits as well as the 1000 minutes to TPG mobiles. Again neither plan offers data. To spend $36 per month and have no data included is a bit weak in today mobile plan environment even though data is charged at 0.2¢/10KB (or 20c/MB or $200/GB). The Premium ($49.99) and the Executive ($79.99) plans finally begin to offers some data. Premier offers just 500MB but gives you $1000 in calls and 1000 minutes to TPG (8pm to midnight). The Executive provides 2GB, $2000 in calls to anyone and 2000 minutes to TPG. These plans have been around for a while. The Premium plan at $50 is one of the most competitive for that price range (500, 2 minuted calls) but it doesn’t really compare that well with the Unlimited offers you can now access. |
